: Carl Sandburg Carl Sandburg worked hard all his life. He quit school in the eighth grade to start working. Carl had many jobs as a young boy. He delivered milk, laid bricks, and many other jobs. As he traveled as a hobo, he learned many folk songs. He was also in the Spanish-American War. After the war, he returned home and became a fireman. He was also in the Poor Writers Club in college. The founder of the club encouraged Carl and thought he was the best in the club. In 1907 he worked for the Wisconsin Social Democratic party. He also wrote for the Chicago Daily News and covered mostly labor issues. Later on he started writing in his own feature. He died on July 22 1967
