James Henderson Berry died in Bentonville, Arkansas on January 30th 1913. He was 71 years, 8 months and 15 days old when he died.

ABOUT HIS/HER LIFE:

Born in coastal Jamaica in 1925, Berry was one of six children. His parents were subsistence farmers, and he enjoyed an early life of rural rhythms and experiences. By age ten he began to feel frustrated by what his village could offer. When he was 17 when World War II happened. Berry went to work in the United States. But he like how they treated people of color. When he saw how they were treated he decided to return to Jamaica. After four years. Nothing had change and nothing improved in the West Indies . In 1948 Berry decided to go to London. He started working and attending night school. When Berry obtained training as a telegrapher he worked in the field for more than two decades. At the same time he stated to write short stories and stage plays.

James Berry, who was born in Jamaica. When he got older he moved to England as a young man. He helped to make a new type of poetry. His work was admired for the sensitive understanding of West Indian and British cultures for it’s innovative use of language. Critics have also praised his award-winning fiction for children that can read
